the kettle whistle blows . . .
frozen mud melts
on the doormat in the kitchen

poking out from
beneath melting snow . . .
bone-white antlers

she laughs brushing
back her hair

he shucks another oyster

  

 

honking on a rural road
the goose keeps
a row of cars waiting

     snaking back and forth
cracks on the wall
     where her picture was

  

 

old cemetery silence . . .
print of horseshoes
in moist turf

forbidden garage corner
the football lies forgotten . . .
two boys wonder at Miss June

  

 

under a marble gray sky
the old sergeant salutes
his row of crosses
